Internship Terms
- Seasons Available: Spring, Summer, and Fall
- Location: 379 S. Meyer Avenue, 2nd Floor, Tucson, AZ 85701
- Primary work will take place at the AFSCME Local 449 office. Some assignments may be completed remotely or at division worksites.
Purpose of the Internship
The AFSCME Local 449 Internship offers students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in labor organizing, public policy, and advocacy. Interns will work alongside experienced labor rights professionals and contribute to meaningful projects that support working people across Southern Arizona.
Responsibilities
Interns will assist with a variety of organizing, research, and administrative projects, including but not limited to:
- Organizing: Develop materials, assist with worksite “lunch and learn” events, and conduct member outreach and assessments.
- Research: Conduct research on topics such as compensation, working conditions, workplace discipline, health and safety, and meet-and-confer negotiations.
- Office Support: Assist with data entry, filing, and record maintenance.
- Event Coordination: Support event logistics, communication, and outreach efforts.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice, and to empowering workers
- Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds
- Strong interest in labor relations, public policy, or community organizing
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines independently
- Empathy, interpersonal skills, and the ability to motivate others to action
- Previous experience in research, organizing, communications, or advocacy is beneficial
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) skills are strongly preferred
